A Randomized Clinical Trial Evaluates Lipolaser RF Cavitation

Two pilot clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of lipolaser RF cavitation in patients with severe TMJ and poor oral airway health. One pilot clinical trial compared the effects of lipolaser with conventional VASER treatment. In this study, postoperative improvement was observed in the patients who underwent both treatments, but there was no significant difference between the two groups in regard to the overall effect on the esophageal sphincter muscle or the lower airway sphincter. No patients were affected with any serious side effects.

In a second pilot clinical trial, dosages of lipolaser were compared with a control group receiving only standard VASER treatment. There was a significant improvement in the control group for both the first and third quarters of the trial, but an increase in the occurrence of postoperative tooth loss was noted. No other serious side effects were noted with the treatment. However, because this is a postoperative study, it cannot determine whether or not the treatment modalities employed were effective for prevention of tooth loss or if they actually worsened the condition during the period of the study.

Other important areas of study included comparisons between VASER and conventional treatments. No significant differences in the rates of symptoms were noted between the two groups. There was also a comparison between those treated with VASER and those who received traditional treatment. Treatment with VASER was found to be more efficient in the prevention of esophageal spasm than was conventional treatment.
